Exhibition Overview

In her 5th solo exhibition, “Me, Then Blue”, Malaysian artist Alice Chang presents a moving tribute to memory, imperfection, and transformation. The exhibition draws inspiration from the 17th-century Wanli Shipwreck, a Portuguese trading vessel discovered off the coast of Terengganu, carrying delicate blue-and-white porcelain from Jingdezhen, China’s famed porcelain capital.

Many of these artefacts, broken and forgotten beneath the sea for centuries, are now reimagined by Alice into contemporary sculptures and expressive paintings. Each piece becomes a vessel for untold stories — a quiet reminder that beauty can still live within what has been broken.

Featured Works

💙 11 sculptural works, featuring authentic Wanli porcelain fragments embedded into mixed-media forms, created without cutting or altering the relics

💙 20 original oil paintings, composed entirely in shades of blue and white, inspired by the motifs of traditional porcelain painting

Together, they form an immersive journey through the artist’s personal reflections on fragility, dignity, and emotional restoration.

A Note from the Alice

“What truly moved me were the broken porcelain pieces —
overlooked and discarded, even though they shared the same history as those displayed in museums or sold at auctions.

I wanted to give them new life —
to honour their scars, preserve their stories,
and remind us that even in brokenness,
there is meaning, strength, and beauty.”
